1BEAT

WHAT IS 1BEAT
1BEAT is a digital platform that unifies clinical patient information, research data and hospital admin tools into one application.
WHY 1BEAT IS CHANGING THE PAEDIATRIC HEALTHCARE LANDSCAPE
For the first time in history, the most extensive paediatric surgical clinical dataset representing children in resource-constrained environments will become digitally visible to the world.
We have cracked the code to making Africa’s children visible in the language the world understands, namely, clinical data. Through 1BEAT, our mobile-first digital patient record system, we’re building the most comprehensive paediatric surgery database ever seen on the continent. And we’re doing it with ‘Dignity by Design’.
Currently operational at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, the 1BEAT app is already delivering life-changing public health insights. It’s transforming how we respond to paediatric burns in real time, reshaping care, reallocating resources, and reforming policy.
Our Collation of Care:
Grounded in global best practice and local realities, 1BEAT is guided by our ‘Dignity by Design’ philosophy:
- Doctor-led, co-designed: built with clinicians, for clinicians for the realities of the South African public sector
- Essential data capture: efficient data capture model for busy doctors on the move
- Mobile-first and infrastructure-light: works on basic devices and networks
- Research-ready, secure, and ethical: built-in anonymisation, patient consent and robust compliance
1BEAT is built to:
- Capture electronic patient records and streamline data entry
- Improve continuity of care and reduce duplication
- Support clinical research and quality improvement
- Enable operational insights for better management
- Integrate with existing systems (e.g., admissions, radiology)
- Protect privacy and data security
- Empower the national health system goals
We need your support to:
- Create the National Paediatric Surgery Database
- Expand 1BEAT to all 12 Paediatric Surgery Units in our country
Without data, there is no visibility.
Without visibility, there is no urgency.
And without urgency, the African child remains unseen.
