Faster recovery for Little Patients
Creativity and play are powerful tools in healing. For traumatised, injured, or sick children, expressing their emotions through art, movement, and music helps ease their fears, uplift their spirits, and even strengthen their immune systems—supporting a faster recovery.
Surgeons for Little Lives proudly sponsor Janine Rech, an Expressive Arts Facilitator, who works with young patients in both the Paediatric Burns and Paediatric Surgery Units. Her sessions provide a creative escape, helping children cope with their experiences in a safe and joyful way.
Due to its success, Janine expanded her work to the Charlotte Maxeke Orthopaedics Wards in 2018!
At the Expressive Art Centre, children engage in painting, drawing, collaging, and—of course—STICKERS!
These activities boost mood, reduce anxiety, and encourage self-expression.
Many children show visible improvement in their behavior and emotional well-being after an art session.
Singing, dancing, and playing drums not only bring joy and confidence but also improve mobility and flexibility in injured or recovering children.
These activities complement Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and nursing care by encouraging movement in a fun, engaging way.
Janine Rech
Janine who runs the Expressive Art Centre also works with children visiting for post-operative check-ups, teaching both caregivers and patients how to use art at home as a way to express emotions, strengthen bonding, and support recovery.
Her impact on the wards is invaluable, making every little patient feel safe, proud, and loved during their hospital journey.
Pencils, pens, paper, coloured paper, paint sets, crayons, kokis, paintbrushes, Glue sticks (e.g., Pritt), Children’s scissors and stickers!
Age-appropriate musical instruments like drums, tambourines, and percussion items.
All contributions help us sustain and grow this initiative, ensuring every child has access to the healing power of art and music.
Together, we can bring creativity, comfort, and healing to little patients in need.
