Cole Grey

This is Cole. He is 10 years old. He was initially seen in 2018 secondary to battery acid ingestion while he was at crèche.

This caused a significant lesion to his oesophagus (the pipe that connects the mouth to the stomach). He could therefore not eat anymore and was barely able to swallow his saliva. He had multiple surgeries to try and dilate his oesophagus but they all failed.

Finally in January 2023 he had his gastric pull-up. This is a big procedure in which we connect the stomach to his throat to enable him to eat again. It is a very risky and complicated surgery that lasted 6 hours. He spent 7 days in ICU afterwards and was intubated for 6 days.

He is now not even 6 weeks post-surgery. He is eating everything, even steak, he is growing and very happy.

Today he brought presents for everyone in the clinic and was full of smiles and gratitude!

Cole’s mom also lodged in our Sleepover facility during all the admissions and surgical procedures.

Thanks Cole and mom!
