Meet Nkosikhona Masikana, Admin Assistant for the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) program at SFLL.

I do all the administration and capture all new patients that were seen, and I make sure that all our patients are seen by Dr Anrie Le Roux on their given date. It is most important that all the patients attend their follow-up on the date that was given to them. I give them a new date if they have defaulted on the previous dates. Follow up is very important to see how they are coping and to arrange the check-up after what has happened.

I also liaise with Social Workers because some patients are taken by them to be placed at special home facilities since we are dealing with abused and neglected kids.  I oversee the court case files as some cases of abuse and neglect are handed over to SAPS. I always check on how the case is going because it must be on my report as we need to keep track of the progress. The aim is to get closure and justice.

I really enjoy my work since I am a person who love kids, and I don’t want to see them being abused and neglected. This program gives me peace knowing that some abused and neglected children can get closure and justice. I am also a mother of two, and I will definitely not be happy to see them being abused. I care a lot about kids!

My wish for South Africa is to see the SCAN (Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect) project being all over the country to all health facilities, and being addressed properly in such a way that all kids will be free to open up and not be afraid of anyone who is abusing them and threaten to kill them.
